Best time to travel to Rwanda
Rwanda can be visited throughout the year. Mountain Gorilla trekking in Parc des Volcans and other forest walks in Nyungwe National Park are less demanding during the drier months. The European winter is the best time for birds, as Pala arctic migrants supplement resident species.
What to bring / Packing list
Binoculars greatly enhance game viewing drives, forest / nature walks and birding. Bring a camera and an adequate stock of films. Toiletries and other essentials can be bought in big cities like Kigali, Butare, Gishenyi and Ruhengeri among others.
Dress Codes / What to Wear?
Dress codes are informal. Daytime temperatures are generally warm for light clothing, supplemented by light sweaters for the cool evenings and heavier clothing for the PNV and Nyungwe National parks.
Sturdier clothing is recommended for gorilla trekking to protect against stinging nettles, and solid jungle walking shoes, not forgetting a hat and sunglasses for protection against the sun. A waterproof jacket on the other hand may come in handy in the moist mountains.
Safety and Health
On your holiday to Rwanda, a certificate of yellow-fever vaccination is required. Much of Rwanda lies at too high an elevation for malaria to be a major concern, but the disease is present and prophylactic drugs are strongly recommended. Avoid drinking tap water. Bottled mineral water can be bought in all towns. Hospitals are located in all major towns.
Almost the entire country is covered by excellent telephone network. Both Local and International phone calls can be made easily. Appropriate SIM cards for the network are readily available everywhere, even in remote towns. Cell phones can be bought or hired from major shops in Kigali. Internet cafes and computer centers are available in all major cities.
Rwanda has strict environmental laws, for instance, the use of plastic bags (polythene papers) has been banned. Beware not to carry such since they will not be allowed into the country at the border checkpoints. Kigali capital is a clean and green city. Rubbish cans are available on streets for waste disposal and avoid littering on streets. Always walk along the provided foot paths and do not step on the grass.
